Environmental Ecology With Five Frugal Living Tips

There is a certain ache that comes with the current economic downturn. It reminds me of the soreness after stretching oneself physically or the fullness after eating a healthy salad (as opposed to fast food). There is a return to frugality as a virtue, and though it does bring a pain with it, from the right perspective it can be one worth embracing.

Tightwads are back in and the timing couldn't be better. There is also a growing belief in environmental soundness. Green is in. The two go together, ecology and frugality. Frugality has the effect of leaving less of a footprint upon the earth, less consuming of the earth's resources. Therefore, every step anyone can take to save money could also have the side benefit of saving the planet. Presented are five ways to save money and the environment.

Change Your Cleaning Products

Go old school with your cleaning products. Dry newspapers can be used to clean glass. A solution of water and white vinegar can also clean glass, stainless steel, etc. A solution of bleach and water can be used to sanitize surfaces. The upside is these products are better for the environment, much cheaper, and as the user will be making the solutions themselves, bottling or dispenser will be reused continually, reducing landfill waste.

Reuse Paper

Why ever pay for a notepad? There is plenty of paper available everywhere, use the inside of envelopes, back of flyers or junk mail, cut to size and bind with a binder clip.

Reuse the back of printer paper. Most pages from a printer do not need to be clean on the backside (especially for home use), so reuse paper. Keep a bin near the printer and keep the print side down, reload with the used paper. Need clean paper? Use the manual feed for the printer, but for most printing needs used paper if fine.

Utility Savings

A little bit goes a long way. Make a game of it and see how improvements can be made month-to-month. As seasons change, it may be better to compare to the previous year, same month (check for rate change to authenticate savings). Still, little things like turning off computer and peripherals when not in use, lights when not in room, lowering temperature in winter and raising in summer, turn water off between rinses of a razor or toothbrush, all can make a marked difference in utility costs. Try it for a month then check the difference, it will be motivating.

Diet

Try being a vegetarian; meat is easily the highest food cost. If being a vegetarian is too extreme, just cut down in meat consumption. Remember a serving of meat is three and half ounces, about the size of a deck of cards. Cutting meat to just one meal a day, at one serving size, that too can cut costs. When eating out, try to stay with salads, which are usually the cheapest entrees on the menu.

Kids

When buying for kids, remember everything changes quickly. Kids are continually growing out of everything they own- clothes, toys, books, etc. Why buy new? Start looking to buy used as most items that are still in use by children a year later can be considered ancient. The younger children learn the reusable lifestyle, the easier it is to appease the "wants" with cheap, used items. Plus, when they outgrow clothes or toys, they can go into a garage sale and recoup some of the cost.

Save Money, Save The Environment
