The Problem With False Praise in Youth Sports - An American Crisis on the Horizon

Far too many psychologists are sticking their noses into the youth sports and coaching. I am not sure why this is, but I do suspect that many of these psychologists were picked on as kids or had no sports talent whatsoever.

Not long ago, I got into a heated debate with an author who stated that compliments, praise, and positive recognition fills the "support tank" of the young athletes psyche. The support tank was an analogy to a car's tank filled with gas, where the car would not go anywhere on empty.

Indeed, I had a real problem with this. You see, actually, false praise is evil, it sets people up for failure later in life. False praise is a lie, lying is not noble. Today, kids expect praise merely for showing up on time to work? That is the minimum expected, all this pandering and false praise is causing weakness, and if a Coach believes in false praise or follows this line of thought, he is doing a severe disservice to the children.

In fact, a real winner, gets so tired of false praise it is almost an insult to their skill, intelligence and strength, especially coming from someone who gives it out so freely to all, because in the end such praise is worthless. (how would I know this?).

In using this analogy of a gas tank; it's akin to putting jet fuel (kerosene) in a car that runs on gasoline. Guess what? It will sputter and fail to perform and eventually will quit. It's called failure and false praise sets kids up for failure and setting people up for failure is pure evil. Think on this.
