Debt Settlement Services
There are steps to take when looking for any type of debt relief that claims Power of Attorney on anyone's' behalf, whether it is debt management or debt settlement, especially the latter. Many people join debt settlement programs blindly not knowing what they are getting themselves into. Here are a few pointers to follow when looking for a debt settlement company or debt settlement program in your state: 1. The company chosen to help with debt management debt settlement should be registered in your state to do business as a third party debt adjuster, if they are not do not join this program. Ask them for their registration number in the particular state you live in. 2. Visit your state Attorney General's or state banking division's web page online. Verify registration number, if they are not listed do not join the program. 3. If they are a local company, based out of your home state, check with your county registrar's office and make sure they are registered there. If these steps are cleared, go on to the next if not stop right there. 4. Check BBB rating. Not as important as the previous steps but you will be able to see how many complaints the prospect company is dealing with at the time. 5. Ask the prospect company if they are insured, in most states debt management programs must be insured, again check with local authorities. 6. If the prospect company meets all of the above criteria it is a safe bet. If any of above are failed think twice about joining that program. 7. Read contractual information sent to you. Most debt management debt settlement contracts are written in a language not easily understood by the average consumer. In most cases it will be extremely hard to get any of your money back if you decide to terminate agreement. Have a lawyer read the contract before signing on the dotted line. 8. Try joining a program with a low fee structure or none at all. The best programs to join are the incentive based programs where you pay them based on their performance. I do not advise anyone in debt to pay fees out front. You can use this money for groceries, gas or heating costs. 9. Always get your settlement offers in writing. Never issue any checks out to anyone with out having the terms agreed upon in writing. Period. 10. Once you are done negotiating settlements on all of your debt, join a credit repair company. It will take anywhere from 6 to 18 months to clean up a bad credit history sometimes more time.
