Safeguard Your Personal Information

Identity theft victims are overwhelmed and horrified when they find out someone is using their personal information to commit fraud and other crimes. Many victims do not realize it is happening for months or years later. By knowing how to safeguard your identity, hopefully you can prevent this nightmare from happening to you.

Never throw anything away that identity thieves can use to become you. Shred all important documents including pre-approved credit offers in your name and any other financial information with your private information. Using a cross-cut shredder that cuts in two directions is best.

Be careful at ATM's, gas pumps, cashiers or any where you have to type in your Pin Number. Shoulder surfers can be watching and with your Pin Number can obtain access to your accounts.

When ordering new checks have them sent to your bank and pick them up. If you have them delivered to your home they can easily be stolen and used.

When mailing off bills with checks in them, drop them off at a U.S. Mailbox or the U.S Post Office. Mail theft is very common among identity thieves today.

Cancel any credit cards that you do not use. Open credit is a prime target.

Be sure and put passwords on all of your accounts. Avoid using obvious passwords like your birth date, mother's maiden name or the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Do not carry personal information in your wallet or purse. Especially anything with your Social Security number on it.

Never give out information on the phone or on the internet unless you know who it is. A lot of identity thieves will pretend to be someone for a reputable company, like your bank or the IRS.

Monitor all your bank statements and credit card statements each month. If there is something you do not recognize be sure and contact them immediately.

Review your credit report as often as you can. Many times this is the first indicator that someone has become a victim of identity theft.

Consider purchasing identity theft protection. After all your identity is your most important asset.

These protective measures will not guarantee that you will not become a victim of identity theft, but by following these steps you can greatly reduce your risks. Identity theft is a serious problem today and anything we can do to prevent the nightmare from happening is important.
