Hidden Camera Basics - What Can They Do For Me
Hidden cameras, also known as spy cameras, nanny cams, or covert surveillance cameras are small covert cameras hidden inside common everyday items such as radios, clocks, or smoke detectors. These cameras usually have a small lens that is hard to spot, unless you know where to look. These hidden cameras transmit their images to a monitor for viewing or a recorder for viewing at a later time. Hidden cameras can be placed in any room or area you want to keep an eye on. They can be used for a wide variety of reasons, such as, to record thefts in an office or store; to keep an eye on your nanny, baby sitter, or family members who are caring for your child or pet; or to discover if your spouse is cheating or lying to you, just to name a few. The images recorded by a hidden camera can be used as evidence to prove who the culprit is in the case of a robbery, theft, or violent crime. A picture is certainly worth a thousand words in this case. Hidden cameras come in wired, wireless, and all-in-one versions. Wired systems require a wire from the camera to the viewing or recording device such as a TV, monitor, DVR, or VCR. Wired cameras can be a good option if you have many other wireless devices in the area you wish to monitor, such as a cordless phone or wireless router for your computer broadband, and are usually the least expensive option. On the other side, it can be hard to hide the wires if you have to run them down a wall or around open floor spaces, and it is more difficult to move the camera if you want to monitor a different space. Wireless systems don't have a video cable, but still require a cord to an electrical outlet. A wireless unit transmits on a wireless frequency to a wireless receiver. The receiver is then wired to the recording or viewing device, which can be in a different room from the camera. Wireless hidden cameras can be the best option in applications where it would be hard to hide the wires from the camera to the monitor or recorder. Wireless hidden camera systems are easy to move from place to place. A cordless phone or broadband router could interfere with the wireless camera signal, if they are on the same frequency and are in close proximity. The all-in-one hidden cameras are new to the market, and have a DVR built into the unit, along with a storage medium (usually a removable SD card). These models do not have any wires coming out (except the power cord), and do not require an external recording device, making them very portable. And, since they do not transmit on any wireless frequencies, there is less chance of interference. They do require a card reader to read the storage device. Hidden spy cameras used to be tools of the trade only available to professionals. Today, with tiny cameras hidden in a wide range of everyday items, hidden cameras can easily be used by all of us. Technology has advanced to offer much smaller components and high quality images and recordings. And, as with most advances in technology, as components get smaller so do their prices. So now, we can all spy to our hearts content. Stay alert and stay safe.
