Camping Cooking

When you're camping cooking can be one of two things. Either it will be a real chore, or it'll be an experience you may even come to enjoy. It pretty much boils down to what you're using for camping equipment. Using the right gear is going to make things much easier for you and therefore your trip will be much more enjoyable.

A decent camp stove is crucial to your camping trip being a success. Let's face it people, without it you're going to be eating nothing more than cold stuff and that's going to get pretty boring after a couple of days on the trail.

I have a couple of stoves that I use when I camp. One is the ever familiar Coleman stove. It's big and green, it has two burners and when I'm car camping it's the perfect complement to my campsite kitchen. It takes those smallish green propane bottles that you can buy just about any place and overall it's a fairly inexpensive stove. It has good wind protection and it's much easier than cooking over an open flame.

If I'm back country camping I have a tiny little Markill camp stove that folds up small enough to fit into my front pocket. These stoves use the primus fuel cans that are most usually found at an outfitter or specialty shop. I prefer to use this stove all the time really. It tends to have a hotter flame than the Coleman stove has and it also has a piezo igniter. It's a very easy stove to work with. The only problem I've found with this particular stove is that the heat is very centrally located. This is because the burner is so small. This causes foods that get thicker like rice and pasta to burn more easily if you don't keep your eye on it. When I replace this stove It will most likely be with a Primus stove that has a slightly greater diameter burner and a piezo igniter.

Along with having a decent stove it's really in your best interest to own some decent camping cookware. Also be sure to use the right utensils in it so it doesn't scratch and you won't mind cooking on the trail at all. Not even a little bit. You'll generally find that decent cookware will clean up more easily, once again making the whole camping cooking ordeal easier and more enjoyable. Keep in mind that if you care for this stuff properly it will last you for years and years to come, so it really is a good idea to buy something that's pretty good.

When you're camping cooking on the open fire is fine for things like steaks and stuff like that but when you start putting your pots and pans on the fire they turn as black as the leftover ashes in the fire pit. This stuff is nearly impossible to get off. I never use my camping cookware on the open fire specifically for this reason. It just makes a mess of everything. Not to mention you get dirty just handling this stuff.
