Bacterial Vs Viral Infection

For starters, the two major pathogens (harmful microscopic organisms) are bacteria and viruses. They do have similarities, which include the ability to cause bacterial and viral infections to human beings. However, this applies more to viruses instead of bacteria (90% of bacteria actually help our bodies function normally).

When it comes to differences, there are a number of them to think about.

1) Physical nature

A bacterium is a one-celled living organism with a complete set of genetic codes (RNA and DNA). Viruses, on the other hand, are considered non-living, due to being just a section of an RNA or DNA strand which is covered by a protein shell. This causes the disparity between their sizes.

2) Method of reproduction

Bacteria are asexual, which means they reproduce using their own self as a template. They'll split themselves into half and rebuild those two halves to create two identical copies. This is a process called mitosis.

Conversely, viruses can only reproduce when they're in a living host. They have the ability to lay dormant for thousands of years before clamping on a host with leg-like appendages. Once inside a host, it will replace the host's genetic codes with its own and create as many copies as possible.

3) Infection

Bacterial and viral infections vary in their method and treatment. Common bacterial infections occur due to the invasion of pathogenic bacteria through the respiratory or digestive tract. Although, there are certain lines of defense, a certain amount of bacteria will always manage to wriggle through. If your body's natural defenses weaken, you will have to consume antibiotics, the most popular one being penicillin, which is used to fight common bacterial infections.

In contrast, viral infections involve a dormant virus getting into a living cell and re-writing the cell's genetic codes with its own. The cell is then used to make more and more copies of the virus. Treatment includes using antivirus, which would also fight the body's natural defense. The best way to combat viral infections is by prevention. A weakened strain of the virus, called a serum, will be injected into the body. Our antibodies will fight this threat and recognize its chemical signatures for future references. If we catch the same virus again, it'll be dealt with quickly.
