Understanding Dust Mite Allergies Symptoms and Causes

Here's what you need to know about dust mite allergy symptoms, causes, treatments, and prevention.

What Is A Dust Mite?

The dust mite is microscopic in size and cannot be seen by the human eye. They will live in even the cleanest homes, and millions can inhabit a single bed. Dust mites - which can only be seen with a microscope - are hardy beasts that live well and multiply easily in warm, humid places. Mites consume particles of skin and dander and thrive in bedding, carpeting, upholstered furniture, clothing, closets, and automobile seats - all likely to contain skin particles. Mites don't bite, cannot spread diseases, and never live on people, only in the environment. While usual household insecticides have no effect on dust mites, some new products are now available to kill mites and help remove them from carpeting.

Dust Mite Symptoms

Do you sometimes wake up congested, with a runny nose, Itchy eyes, Itchy skin? If your answer is yes, then you're likely allergic to dust mites. People who are allergic have a reaction to proteins in the bodies and digestive waste feces of the mites.

If you are not allergic to dust mite residue, it's not harmful and will not cause you a problem. But if you are, inhaling the residue can cause bothersome allergy symptoms, including wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose.

As with any allergy , symptoms appear when the immune system mistakes a normally harmless protein for a foreign invader; this protein that causes the reaction is known as the allergen.

People who are allergic are allergic to the residue that dust mites leave behind in the form of their feces and the decaying bodies mixes with dust and becomes airborne. If you're allergic to dust mites, you may develop a red, itchy bump where the dust mite extract was scratched onto your skin. If you often wake up with congestion, a runny nose, watery eyes, itching, or sneezing, then you're most likely allergic to dust mites. Even just a minute or two in a dusty room can trigger symptoms such as sniffling and sneezing for someone with a dust allergy .

If you are, inhaling the residue can cause bothersome allergy symptoms, including wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose. These particles are called dust mite allergen and continue to cause allergic symptoms even after the dust mite itself has died.

Although dust mite populations decrease during winter in areas where the climate is cold and dry, some sensitive people report that their symptoms get worse during that time! That's usually because mite fecal particles and pieces of dead mites, both of which trigger dust mite allergy , are still present. People may get fewer symptoms in the summer because they spend more time outdoors and need not run the furnace indoors.

What Can You Do To Relieve Dust Mite Allergy Symptoms?.

Avoidance works best to relieve symptoms. However, you can follow certain anti-mite procedures that will reduce mite populations and your exposure to them, thereby reducing your symptoms. Your doctor may also recommend allergy medications or allergy injections.

You can get rid of dust mites and your allergy symptoms by using special dust mite allergy relief products for that purpose which include Allergy Bedding and Bedding Encasings, HEPA air cleaners, HEPA air purifiers, allergy bedding, HEPA vacuum cleaners, personal care products, face masks, sinus relief products, dehumidifiers, respiratory care products, anti-allergen carpet cleaning treatments and more.
